YA writers are some of the best writers out there because they have to capture and hold the attention of young readers, and that’s not always easy.
That’s exactly why I enjoyed Jupiter Drake – Starships of Eoth by Mark Meaney. It’s well written, engaging from the start, and filled with very likeable characters. Breeze is easily my favourite, a cute creature who can only speak in three-word sentences, which makes them genuinely adorable.
Peter and Maggie react to their situation in very different ways. Maggie is in denial, convinced she’s dreaming, while Peter is more practical and focused on doing the right thing. They’ve both been thrown into a completely different world, made even more confusing by the fact that they’re from different times, Maggie from 1940s and Peter from the modern day.
I also loved that the story begins at an adventure park just up the road from where I live, which made it feel even more immersive.
If you enjoy adventure, mystery, and that “what on earth is going on?” feeling as everything suddenly shifts, you’ll love this. One moment Peter is just living his life, and the next he’s in a completely different world, a bit like Narnia.
A fun, engaging read with plenty of intrigue and heart, and I’m really looking forward to seeing where the series goes
